ATTENTION: AOL Users !

Netscape Internet Browser - the solution for AOL users.

Some users of America OnLine have experienced problems getting Adobe's Acrobat Reader 4.0 to work within AOL's internet browser. When attempting to access DogTest forms via healthdogs.com website, AOL users have experienced blank screens or computers 'freezing'. This is due to the particular way AOL browsers were designed to access the internet.

But, by using the popular Netscape browser to access the internet - yes, during an AOL session - AOL users can take advantage of DogTests™. This is because Netscape integrates better with Acrobat Reader 4.0 and as a browser Netscape directly accesses the internet whether your internet provider is AOL, earthlink, compuserve, prodigy, etc.

Once installed on your machine, like many other AOL users, you will probably prefer to 'surf the web' with Netscape.

Using Netscape (Navigator) with AOL:

Here's all you'll do:

Now when you make a selection in DogTests, Netscape will open up the form (or you can save the form yourself to your hard-drive by right-clicking on the link (eg the word 'subscribe'). When you've got the form opened and on your screen, just click a field on it, type in your data and tab/enter to the next field (shift-tab reverses direction). Reader will place what you type into the boxes. When you're finished, just print out the form on your good quality printer at full size.

Exploring the Internet with Netscape (Navigator)

When you've finished with DogTests , try out the various buttons on the Netscape toolbar to familiarize yourself with Netscape. "Surf the web" a little. Start with http://www.akc.org or http:// www.bullterrier.org When you want to exit Netscape, simply exit as you would from other software. Remember AOL is still running. So you still have access to your email and all other AOL services. Exit AOL as usual.

Installation of Netscape & Acrobat Reader 4.0.

You'll find installation programs for both Netscape' browser (Navigator) and Reader 4.0 on our CDROM. (Netscape48.exe & \Installers\acrd4enu.exe). or you can get them from the download sections of Adobe.com and Netscape.com

If you do not already have Acrobat Reader 4.0 installed on your machine, it is better to install Netscape first. If Acrobat Reader already installed, install Netscape and then re-install Reader 4.0.

To install both programs:

  1. Close out all open programs
  2. Open Windows Explorer and click to your CDROM drive so you can see its contents
  3. Double click on Netscape48.exe (this will start the installation automatically)
  4. Accept all defaults (click OK)

When Netscape has been fully installed,

  1. Return to Windows Explorer again and click to your CDROM drive to see its contents
  2. Double click on \Installers\acrd4enu.exe
  3. Accept all defaults (click OK)
  4. When finished, shut down and re-start your computer. This will complete your installation.

For Netscape to integrate the Reader 4.0, it needs to find a special file in the 'plug-ins' subdirectory of Netscape on your hard-drive. Reader ordinarily copies this file there. However, in rare instances, this file (nppdf32.dll) needs to be copied manually to that location. Therefore, if Reader doesn't work with Netscape automatically, check via Explorer that this file is in Netscape's 'plug-ins' subdirectory on your hard drive. If not, the file can be found on your cdrom under /CD/Reader/Browser. Drag a copy of the file to the Netscape Plug-ins subdirectory on your hard drive and restart Netscape.
